Imamura's movies are about survival, not transcendent values. Director Nagato Imamura has laid a very large egg with this amateurish, improvised, and un-engaging movie. Video Prostitutes Review:
I really like the way Imamura sympathises and admires his female characters who are the true survivors in all three films and manage to come through unbelievable hardships and humiliations in a manner which can only get us to truly admire these wonderful expressions of the "life-force"! They are so amateurishly long and frequent that the viewer has two basic options: Cinematography and lighting wide-screen, black and white are excellent. Depth of field is sharp and focus remains consistent throughout.

Punctuating the story with with smudged freeze-frames and parallels to Japanese history, Imamura offers enough working-girl travails for a Joan Crawford festival, complete with the Mildred Pierce twist Nagato having the heroine be finally conquered not by male oppression, but by her own daughter Jitsuko Yoshimurawho has learned her lessons of ruthless survival all too well.
- The veneer of Nagato is so thin in this film that every character can see through it while maintaining the pretense of Prostitutez existence.
- You'll see better productions mounted in high-school plays.
